Smart Signage

Intelligent signs and digital signage systems

Positioning

Smart signage upgrades wayfinding, advertising boards, street-name signs and shop signs into connected, manageable information points. Displays, controllers, communications, sensors and edge devices connect to content-management and maintenance platforms. Applications include shopping centres, streets, metro and bus stops, hospital and campus wayfinding, government-service halls, rural information boards and visitor attractions.

Core functions

Display and content

Display options include LED matrices, LCD, e-paper, transparent, bar-format and custom-shaped screens. Content can combine text, images, video, animation, scrolling messages, QR codes and maps. Visual templates divide screens into wayfinding, announcements and advertising zones. Daily, weekly or monthly schedules, priority overrides for emergency notices, timed power control and brightness policies coordinate playback. Groups of screens can share content, form tiled displays or run coordinated animation. Cached schedules continue during network loss and synchronise with logs after reconnection.

Sensing and interaction

  • Ambient-light sensing for adaptive brightness and reduced night-time light pollution, with temperature, humidity, PM2.5 and noise monitoring where required.

  • Infrared, ToF or appropriately governed camera-based audience statistics, such as counts and dwell time. The reference scope calls for aggregate statistics without retaining biometric features.

  • Touch, voice interaction with local wake words and offline commands, QR-code details, NFC/Bluetooth proximity services and accessible call buttons.

  • Indoor guidance, route planning, floor selection and multilingual interfaces, including Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean where configured.

Maintenance and energy management

Maintain asset records and remotely manage power, restart, time, firmware and configuration. Monitor display degradation, failed pixels/modules, power and temperature faults, and lost connections, with linked work orders. Scheduled dimming, reduced idle power, and optional solar/battery designs support outdoor or rural sites. Reporting can cover energy use and carbon estimates. Editorial review, approval, release records and signed content support controlled publishing.

Operations and data

Measure playback duration, qualified exposure, visitor conversion and QR interactions, with A/B tests where suitable. Advertising management can include inventory, schedules, settlement reports, contracts and content versions. APIs can link shopping-centre membership, parking, public-transport scheduling and official information services.

Technical approach

Displays, sensors, cameras and speakers connect to Android/Linux media players and edge gateways for rendering, caching and lightweight statistics. Networks may use Ethernet, Wi-Fi, 4G/5G or NB-IoT, with dual-SIM redundancy where appropriate outdoors. Platform services cover devices, content, scheduling, users, permissions, audit logs and messaging; data services use time-series, relational and object storage as appropriate.

  • CDN distribution, incremental synchronisation and version checks maintain consistent content. The reference target for tiled-display frame synchronisation is an error within one frame, subject to the selected system and acceptance tests.

  • Transcode uploaded media into suitable resolutions, bitrates and formats so each device retrieves compatible content.

  • Use TLS, signed content, allowlists, trusted boot, administrator multi-factor authentication and audit trails. Review MLPS Level 2 or 3 for China deployments; government and metro projects may require the higher level.

  • Outdoor design proposals include IP65 or higher, a −30°C to +60°C range, lightning protection, grounding, glare control, direct-view brightness of at least 5,000 cd/m² and wind-load assessment. These are selection requirements for suitable outdoor hardware, not specifications of every display.

Implementation

Survey locations, power, networks, viewing distance and approvals. Produce site and structural drawings, select and prototype the display and controller, and deploy the platform in the agreed public/private cloud environment. Migrate media, build templates and roll out in stages. Test brightness, uniformity, defective pixels, switching latency and recovery after network loss, then hand over maintenance and training.

Intended benefits

The objectives are better wayfinding, measurable announcement reach, managed advertising inventory and lower energy use. The supplied proposal includes a 20%–40% energy-saving ambition; the actual result must be measured against an agreed baseline and operating conditions.
